I have an email account with Optimum Online. This account - a POP account - works fine on my Mac and my iPhone. Since upgrading to iOS 4.2.1 on my iPad, I can't get or send email on this account. I tried deleting the account and adding it back, and now I can't add it back. First it tells me that SSL doesn't work with my SMTP server, then it fails to verify the account with the POP server.
I went on the webmail for Optimum Online to verify that I have the correct password, and I do.
Next I tried to add this account to my son's iPad, which is also running iOS 4.2.1, and which runs various POP and IMAP accounts without a problem. I was unable to add the account to his iPad either, which has had no other problems with 4.2.1.
I also tried this while connected to wifi as well as when connected to 3G with good signal.
This tells me that my iPad is OK, but that there may be an issue with Optimum Online POP accounts and iOS 4.2.1 for iPad. I was able to add this account to my iPhone running iOS 4.2.1.
Any suggestions? This is very frustrating.

  • When you set up your email program, you may be prompted to 'leave a copy of your emails on the server.' We recommend you accept this option.
  • 'Email Size Limit' refers to the size of a single email, and 'Send To Limits' include the To, CC and Bcc fields in emails. These limits are the same whether you're using webmail or SMTP.

SMTP, POP3 and IMAP are different ways your email program (say, Outlook) communicates with your email provider (CenturyLink). Here are some simplified explanations:

IncomingConfiguring
  • POP3 (Post Office Protocol)—Like its name implies, POP3 is the equivalent of the post office. It's for storing your email.
  • SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)—SMTP gets your email from one place to the next, routing it between servers and eventually to your computer desktop. An SMTP port sends an email through a network and to its recipient. If you were sending snail mail, it would be the mailman. CenturyLink filters port 25 for increased security. Learn more about port 25 filtering.
  • IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol)—IMAP is a fancier version of POP3. For instance, with IMAP, you can keep your email on the server, something you can't do with POP3. IMAP requires more server space and computing power to operate. We don't currently support IMAP.
